Choose from the list the things that have an effect on your wellbeing.
Now it is time to use your imagination a little. Imagine a line of people with their arms linked together. Each person represents a different thing that affects wellbeing.
Now we are going to consider the scenario of having broken your mobile phone. You need your phone to contact both your family and your work. You don’t have enough money to get your phone repaired or to buy a new one.
Money is going to start moving forward in the chain pulling forward the others in the chain. As you cannot contact your family that too might become an issue and family will start moving forward too. Due to the stress you’re not sleeping well so sleep starts to pull forward as well. The more you worry about money the more the chain is pulled until eventually what happens?
The chain breaks!
The chain represents our wellbeing. If something happens in life such as an event or problem we need to move with it and adapt to it to ensure we don’t break our chain.
These adaptations equate to our emotional resilience or our ability to overcome adversity.
If we don’t adapt or change then our wellbeing will break and other areas of our life will be affected. We look more at making changes and problem solving in lesson 2.
If we hold onto our problems for too long without talking to someone about them or finding a solution it can be harder to deal with them. We all experience things in different ways and what may appear easy for one person may be really difficult for someone else.
Being emotionally resilient is being able to adapt to things around us. We cannot change things that happen to us most of the time, therefore we need to adapt the way we react to ensure we can maintain our wellbeing.
Have you ever been told to “snap out of it”? This is not an easy thing to do and not a very kind thing to say to someone. Remember to be kind to others and just how hard it can be to stop feelings.
Time now to think about what affects YOUR wellbeing. Think about each of the areas and what about it affects your wellbeing, what has in the past and what could affect it in the future.
