Anxiety and coping

Anxiety is the most common mental health difficulty in children and young people. It can stem from various sources, including school, home, friends, family, and broader fears about the future. While anxiety is a natural emotion and many fears and worries are typical at different ages, it can become problematic if it interferes with everyday life.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. It is a normal response to stress and can even be beneficial in some situations, as it can motivate us to prepare or avoid danger.

However, when anxiety becomes excessive, it can lead to significant distress and impair daily functioning.

The Fight or Flight Response

Anxiety triggers the body’s fight or flight response, a survival mechanism that prepares us to either confront or escape danger.

This response causes physical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and nausea. While this response can be helpful in genuine danger, it can be overwhelming when triggered by everyday situations.
